BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA - June 7, 2025
Revised plans for Bartow Arena upgrade were approved by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees on Friday. The revisions detailed in the Stage II project proposal drop the cost of the project from the previously projected $20.3 million to $14.63 million.
According to a UAB press release, pending UAB Athletics reaching fundraising goals and additional UA System Board of Trustee approvals, the project is anticipated to break ground following the completion of UAB's Spring 2026 Commencement ceremonies. The 2026 commencement ceremonies are scheduled for May 1-2.
The plans include:
*Constructing a new club level lounge with approximately 4,600 GSF of space and associated premium club seating, on the concourse level and adjacent to the entrance lobby
*Replacing portions of the floor level retractable seating with new seating that will bring spectators closer to the court.
*Expanding the entrance lobby and ticketing area by adding approximately 7,400 gross square feet (GSF)
*Modernizing the lobby and concourse with new lighting, paint, finishes and graphics
*Updating spectator restrooms on concourse level
“Our proposed renovations would make Bartow one of the most visible, accommodating and inviting basketball and volleyball venues in the American Conference," UAB athletic director Mark Ingram said in the press release.
Projected funding for the upgrades include $8.4 million in future UAB grant funds, $3.78 million in Institutional/Central Reserve Funds and $2 million in gift funds.
Quotes from UAB basketball coaches Andy Kennedy and Randy Norton and volleyball coach Betsy Freeburg were included in the press release:
"It is truly exciting to take these important steps toward approval of the Bartow Arena renovation plans," said Kennedy, whose men’s basketball team has been one of the nation's winningest programs over the last five years with 125 wins and four consecutive conference championship game appearances. "We are 74-15 in Bartow in recent years, and renovations would increase our home court advantage even more. I am very grateful and appreciative to all who have worked tirelessly to make this happen."
"We're incredibly excited and grateful to receive Stage II approval of the Bartow Arena renovation plans," said Norton, who is 211-159 in 12 seasons as the women’s head coach. "This project represents a major investment in our student-athletes, our fans, and the future of UAB Basketball. The enhancements would have a huge impact on recruiting, player development, and the overall game day experience for fans. We can't thank our trustees, administration and supporters enough for their commitment to excellence."
"The Bartow Arena renovation project would make a huge impact on the volleyball program," said Freeburg, who is entering her sixth season as the Blazers volleyball head coach. "It would not only continue to elevate the experience for our growing fan base, but also make an immediate impact for our student-athletes. We are excited about the opportunity to continue developing and competing for AAC Championships."
