BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA - October 14, 2025
Trent Dilfer used a statement released Monday on social media to reflect on his tenure as the UAB football coach. Dilfer was let go on Sunday at the midway point of his third season at UAB.
“I am filled with Gratitude for the opportunity I was given at UAB and the incredible people I was able to come in contact with during my time there,” Dilfer wrote in the statement. “Birmingham is an awesome city and my wife and I have been overwhelmed with the love we have felt from this city. As a competitor, it crushes me that we were not able to reach our standard of winning on the field, I wish I could have done more. I am truly thankful for every battle we were able to fight on and off the field.”
Dilfer finished 9-21 in his time at UAB, including 2-4 this season. His final game was a 53-33 loss at Florida Atlantic, marking is 15th consecutive road loss as UAB’s head coach. UAB athletic director Mark Ingram, who made the decision to replace Dilfer with interim head coach Alex Mortensen, praised his former head coach.
“A great human being, a really great guy who I loved working with,” Ingram said. “That’s another reason that makes it so hard. Again, when you hire good people, which we focus on, and he is, that just makes it even more difficult. But it’s, as you said, a results business which he knows and he certainly accepts.”
